“There can be no Justice unless criminals are punished. ” Justice can be defined as fair treatment or behavior. For Christians, the idea of justice comes from a belief that all people are created in the image of God (imago die) and should therefore be treated with dignity and respect. Therefore, whenever a person commits a crime it is the responsibility of the government to make sure that the issue of Justice is addressed. Some Christians believe that punishing criminals is the only way victims can get justice. Capital punishment is the execution off person because of a crime that they eve committed.
It is otherwise know as the death penalty. Some Christians and victims’ families would agree that this is the only way of getting Justice for the most serious crimes such as murder. There is evidence in the Old Testament to support this such as ‘an eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth’ and those who draw the sword shall die by the sword’. This implies that retribution and protection is the only way to find Justice for the victims and their families. Roman Catholics believe that the use of the death penalty is Justified in certain extreme situations where it is the only option available to protect society.
Many Christians believe that, in line with the principles of Justice, criminals should be punished for their crimes, but it is also important that they are treated appropriately and fairly. Some Christians, such as the 18th-century Quaker, Elizabeth Fry, were actively involved in improving prison so that prisoners had access to good food, education and were being treated well as everyone is equal (the sanctity of life). In Matthew 25:34-40 Jesus visits a prison ‘ I was sick and you took acre of me, in prison ND you visited me. ‘ This part of the bible shows that you should treat everyone how you would want to be treated.
It shows that god wants to see himself in everyone, as he has forgiven him or her. This quote is showing that if we don’t go and visit the criminals and forgive them, the God will never forgive us. Christianity does allow people to change and reform so that they are less likely to roofed again. ‘You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free’. This shows that if you can own up to your crime then you stand a chance in forgiveness. In the film ‘Dead Man Walking Sir Helen a Christian tries to support Matthew Opponent a murderer as she believes that every person deserves respect, and she sees another side of this ‘changed’ criminal.
She says ‘ I don’t agree with what he has done. But I don’t believe in killing people to show that killing is wrong. I agree with Sir Helen, I think that this is a very effective way of putting it. I believe that committing a crime that leaves the victim’s distraught or even dead is very wrong, and should never be taken lightly. But by killing the criminal to show what they have done is wrong is discuss as this is Just retaliating and doesn’t allow people to change.
I do believe in Re essay-Criminals and Justice By gamma_cotton have done has no human qualities and therefore they should be treated as an animal locked away. Although I believe that everyone should be given a chance for forgiveness and therefore should not face the death penalty. I agree with the statement as I believe that the only way the victims can feel a sense of Justice is if the criminal is punished but I don’t think this punishment should lead to the death penalty, as I believe that killing is wrong no matter who does it.
