The overall idea for this paper is to persuade the deader that it is only right that first time convicted DUD driver should receive mandatory Jail time. First Time Convicted DUD Drivers Should Receive Mandatory Jail Time In America there are 233 billion trips in cars each year. Out of those, every two thousand trips are taken by those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or better known as DUD (MAD, 2014). An estimate of one-third of DUD cases that end in crashes, deaths, arrests, and injuries, comes from repeated offenders.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in 2012 about 29. 1 million people admitted to driving under the influences of alcohol, that’s more than the population of Texas. Driving under the influence is the cause of dangerous roads in America. Driving drunk can be prevented, simply by not getting behind a wheel while drinking, but those who still decide to drink and drive should be harsh fully punish. Drivers convicted of a first- time DUD should receive mandatory Jail time.
Safety Comes First When Driving First, mandatory Jail time for first time convicted DUD drivers will make our road safer and decrease the amount of motor vehicle crashes leading to death related incidents, u to drunk driving. Driving under the influence is one of the biggest dangers facing America motorists today. Our highways, secondary and main roads are being droving on by more and more of drivers under the influence. In 2012, 10,322 people died because of a drunk driver, which is one death every 51 minutes (GNATS, 2013).

Out of those children that were killed, 122 or 54% percent were riding with the drunken driver. Every time a selfish drunken driver decides to get behind a wheel and drive, they are making an irresponsible decision and putting many innocent lives at risk. One irresponsible action can cost another human their life.

Those costs could be due to work related costs, medical costs and property damage. Say if a drunk driver crash into another motor vehicle in a very brutal car accident and the victim is severely hurt and not able to work, or better yet, has no medical insurance. So, who pays for the victim lost wages, medical bills or the guard rail, road sign and road pavement that was damage due to the car accident? The victim lost wages could be paid by the employer if the Job offer paid leave or had saving in case of emergencies.
If not, the victim lost wages are paid by government; unemployment, government housing, etc. The medical bills and damage roads will also be paid by the government. So who pays the government? The taxpayers pays the government and for the government programs that are used when someone in need of help. One drunken driver can affect millions of household and the United States as a hold. If we give mandatory Jail time to first time convicted DUD drivers, we ill be able to save the United States and its’ taxpayers billions of dollars each year.

Drinking and getting behind a wheel of motor vehicle put many innocent lives at risk. It should not be up to a drunk driver to take the lives of others.
